Hollywood Poker Review, Bonuses & Downloads

A newer room that's enjoyed fast growth thanks in part to exposure from celebrity games on television, Hollywood Poker offers a welcome diversion from some of the old standards.

While they don't have the largest prize pools around, Hollywood Poker keeps in focus with interesting celebrity tie-ins. The Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational Tournament plays each Thursday at 10pm EST, in which bounties are placed on celebrity players, and those who knock them out receive special bonuses.

There are a variety of other events following the same principle, including the WPT Celebrity Shootout, and Celebrity Classic games on Sundays.

Some other great features include the ability to create private tables for any game type offered (a great way to play with friends when you can't get together for a game), your choice of heads up, 5 or 10 player tables for most games, and a good bonus structure (see below).

The only notable downside was in the game lobbies, including no ability to 'sort' the tables to your preference, and some abbreviations that take a little getting used to. That said, with good features overall, fair rakes and some fun tourney's, it really is a fun place to play. Currently supports deposits via epassporte, NETeller, InstaCash, Firepay, Visa and Mastercard.

One of the few rooms we've seen that offers a choice for players in what bonus they'd like. Currently offering three options for new players:
  • A 25% bonus up to $50 free.
  • A 500% bonus up to $1000 free (with more stringent play through requirements).
  • A free tournament package.

While most poker rooms offer a prominent 'download now' link, Hollywood Poker requires that you register first through a 'play now' link off their site before you'll see it. Once you've registered to play, you can log in and choose the downloadable software, or play directly through your browser window - a great option for Mac and Linux players.

The Downloadable Version: Is available for windows only, and look and plays very similarly to the no-download games. Menu graphics are a little better, sounds are crisper, and the client will launch slightly faster than the no-download counterpart for frequent players, but there's really no significant differences.

The No-Download Version: Pops up a new browser window, with the games powered by a Java client. Some people may have to download and install the latest Java Runtime in order for the games to load properly, available freely at Java.com. The tables actually look pretty good for a no-download version, while still launching pretty quickly. The sound effects are a little weak, but serve their purpose nonetheless.

Good setup for sit and go tournaments, offering your choice of five and ten player tables or heads up games. Sit and go qualifiers running around the clock, and quite a few scheduled tournaments throughout the day.
